4Overall Very Nice 4.25/5 stars
By Johnny Colorado
Am I really the only one who bought this? ... Ok, my old setup was a very nice (for the time) Denon 5.1 receiver with JBL speakers (before the days of HD or HDMI interfaces), this is what I am comparing to... my current setup has this home theater package and a new 65" LG 3D HD TV...

Speakers (8.5 to 9 out of 10):
The speakers sound very good, without any reviews to go off of, I was scared that they wouldn't, but I am happy with the sound.
When listening to music only from CD or iPad, my stereo speakers (Altec's) probably sounded a tiny bit better, but that is expected since that is what they are designed for and the difference is not very big. While playing the audio from movies (like Transformers or Avatar) these speakers sound great... at times, even better than great... and for the most part, better than my JBL's...

Now for the 3D sound stuff... I didn't buy into the 3D sound before I bought these speakers and I can't say I have since. Yes, they have speakers shoot up out of each enclosure, if you close your eyes and imagine you are hearing sound all around you, maybe...maybe... but I can't say that I can tell the difference between the surround sound experience and the 3D sound experience, perhaps you will... overall, the experience is pretty awesome, so I'm not sure I care a ton...

Speaker setup was not too bad, you pretty much have to use the included wire, since they use non-standard connectors at the speaker enclosure, plus they are running multiple pairs of wires to each speaker... the wireless rear speakers do a nice job of picking up the signal from the receiver... for those who are wondering how the wireless speakers work (like I was), here's the quick version... you plug in a small usb looking transmitter into the main receiver and plug in the "speaker receiver" to the wall in the back of your room where you want to run the rear speakers. Then, you run speaker wires (included) from the "speaker receiver" to the rear speakers. To me, this is not very "wireless", but it is more wireless than having to run speaker wires from the front of your room to the rear, and from what I can see, this is the way all "wireless" speaker systems work. Performance wise, I can not tell that the speakers are not plugged directly in to the main receiver, there is no lag in sound, when the bad guy steps on a stick behind you, you hear it behind you...

Receiver (8 out of 10) :
The receiver is pretty nice, it's got more features than you could possibly need, and I am the first to admit, I have not tried them all out. Setup is super easy, "wizard style" questions guide you through setup and internet setup.

One thing I do laugh a little at is that the picture in the manual shows the receiver with the DVD drawer open so you can load a DVD, took me more than a few minutes to figure out that there is no DVD drawer, you just feed the DVD in to the receiver similar to how you would load a CD in your car stereo. The DVD experience is probably where the receiver loses it's points... if you leave a DVD in the player "mid-movie" and turn off everything off, it doesn't remember your place in the movie, I thought this was a pretty standard feature... also, when playing Avatar 3D, the player would pause for a half a second 2 or 3 times throughout the movie, not sure what it was doing, not sure if it will do this every time, I've only watched Avatar 3D one time, but it was enough to be a little annoying, I subjectively ruled out the disk being scratched since if you rewind and play again, it would not pause the second time in the same place, mostly it did not pause at all after you rewinded.... Playing the 2D version on the same disk was fine. Other 3D movies have not had the same problem, this was not a big issue maybe half a star... Performance wise, bluray looks as awesome from this receiver/player as any other I have seen... Directv HD looks as good as other HD I've seen... No issues there...

The remote control is pretty user friendly and everything is menu driven. Controlling the receiver via the directv remote is a little frustrating and if you are not paying attention to the "mode" you are in on the directv remote, you can find yourself in menus that I have not figured out a way to get out of other than getting up and getting the remote that came with the receiver and telling it to 'exit'.

When all is said and done, I would buy this setup again, I am overall very pleased with it. I hope someone at LG reads this and puts in a software patch that will allow the DVD player to remember where in your movie you are.

4LG BH9420PW - Home Theater System 5 speakers, sub, 3D blue ray
By Kim
We purchased this on Monday and received it the very next day (I LOVE amazon for that). Anyways, we had purchased a nice sound bar system at Fry's earlier last week and it was awful, so we returned it and took a chance on an online purchase. We were a little hesitant from the reviews, but decided on it anyway, the price was right and we have an LG TV and are pleased with that. I was a little intimidated when we opened the box because there was so much stuff. It was package very nicely and I LOVE the fact that all of the wires and cords are labeled and labeled on BOTH ends of it. The wireless receiver was SO easy, we plugged it in and it automatically connected with the receiver. Just an FYI, the Blue Ray player is the receiver as well, I didn't read that in the description but prob missed over it. We were able to connect the receiver to our wireless router incredibly easy. I mainly purchased this unit for the speakers, so I could listen to music while doing all the fun chores around the house, so I first tried the system with Pandora. I am SOOO happy with the sounds quality. I really like the different settings, either all of the speakers can be on, the two tall ones, the two wireless ones, all but the sub, etc, it's really cool. That might be a standard feature but this is my first "real" home theater system so I was pleasantly surprised. All in all I would highly recommend this product to anyone in the home theater system market with a $600ish price point. From opening the box to final speaker placement it took about 30minutes, of which half of it was unpacking the carefully packaged items. Very pleased.

Also, from one reviewer to another, when writing a review let's all remember to review the product; just because you received a product damaged doesn't mean it's a bad product. I've had my share of damaged product received and when I receive the replacement item it's worked out just fine.

5Engaging Surround Sound with Easy Installation
By C. Sebastian
In October 2012, I became serious about purchasing a home-theater-in-a-box. It was time to upgrade the sound quality of my television programming and gaming sessions to something more than stereo. None of the online reviews were all that helpful when I compared this particular unit to, say, similarly priced HTIB units.

For the record, my decision came down to this LG product and the Panasonic SC-BTT490. The initial problem I had getting to this point: neither were setup in a local electronics shop. I could experience the downgraded units from both manufactures (LG BH9220BW and Panasonic SC-BTT195), but the "high-end" units were not carried in-store when I went looking for them.

After two months, the LG BH9420PW finally won the tug of war. It was somewhat of a shot in the dark, but I'm happy to report the result. First off, the package is complete with all the components you read about: five speakers, tall boy speaker stands for the FL and FR speakers, 5.1 audio, Blu-ray/receiver combination, and a wireless receiver for the BL and BR speakers. Yes, audio cables run from the back speakers to the wireless receiver and yes, you need somewhere in the back of the room to plug-in the power to the wireless receiver.

Installation took about as much time as ripping off the packaging. Most of the process is color-coated. Putting together the tall boy stands takes a bit more effort if you want to them to be sturdy, but the extra time pays off. I have no fear of them falling over and I can easily adjust where they are placed--as long as I lift from the base.

Once the installation is complete, I found syncing the rear wireless receiver with the front receiver worked as the instructions read on the first attempt. Over the past two months, I have had no issues with connectivity between the receivers. Even having to unplug the front setup to replace furniture did not cause connection issues when everything was plugged in again. The space between the two receivers is roughly 12 feet, in case you are curious.

I wanted to wait a couple of months before writing this review because I needed time to experience Blu-rays, DVDs, video games, and TV programming from a variety of genres. I also wanted to play with various hardware setups. While I don't know if I have found the ideal setup, here is how I am enjoying the total package:

Hardware Configuration
I have the receiver (the Blu-ray/receiver combo, hereafter referred to simply as the receiver) plugged directly into the television via HDMI. I am using the HDMI inputs on the back of the receiver for Tivo and a gaming console. All of my HD electronics are being fed into the receiver. This means the receiver must be powered on before I can watch TV or play a game. Changing inputs requires going to the receiver's home screen and selecting an input in most cases. The alternative is cycling through all the available inputs in order with the press of one button, which is helpful if you're going from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2, but not the other direction. :)

Blu-ray and DVD
Regardless of the input the receiver may be set to, inserting a DVD or Blu-ray overrides the current input and redirects you to the disc's menu when it boots up. Blu-rays look and sound brilliant; you'll notice when Blu-rays hit a layer adjustment, but the pause is the same as I have seen on other players--such as PlayStation 3. DVDs also run fluidly and look far better through the capability of the Blu-ray player than a dedicated DVD player. The aspect ratio of the DVD is adjusted to better fit widescreen TVs. The unit is also quiet when running the discs. Only once has a DVD made the receiver sound like it was preparing for lift-off; ejecting the DVD and re-inserting it in the hidden disc slot corrected the issue.

Television
TV shows made with 5.1 audio sound fantastic. Arrow, Justified, The Good Wife -- all reinforce my purchase decision. Commercials can range from similar quality as the TV show being watch to tolerable, depending on which channels the audio comes from. If you are watching a low-budget, local advertisement--it becomes more obvious. Same goes for watching classics like Remington Steele or Batman--audio from the front speakers will have to suffice.

Surround Sound
Probably the sole reason you started looking at this unit in the first place. After setup, there will be a period of adjusting the sound levels. Once the sweet spot for your room setup is found, you'll be pleased with the quality of this system. Voices and conversations come through with clarity and depth. Action movies, such as Dredd, sound almost as good as when in theaters. The bass from the subwoofer is surprisingly strong given the wattage--more than sufficient for an entertainment space 400 sq. ft. Some Blu-rays make excellent use of the "3D Sound," making the source of the sounds a bit more ambiguous. There is an overall richness to the quality, one that separates this unit from the Panasonic and resembles what you'd find with the higher end Samsung speaker packages. It has also been great for gaming. I found that games tend to play a bit louder than movies or TV when set to the same volume level. From Darksiders II to Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed, the surround sound really adds a layer of depth that helps further transport the player into the game.

Overall, I'm giving this 5 stars because I took a chance and it paid off. I would have loved to experience the Panasonic unit mentioned earlier, but I have no reason to doubt my purchase. This is a quality LG product.
